How to Edit Log Entries

Learn how staff and administrators can locate, open, update, and save student log entries using the PureData Behavior Management plugin.

Introduction

Log Entries in PowerSchool SIS are commonly used by schools and districts to document student-related information such as behavioral incidents, academic concerns, parent communication, counseling notes, attendance follow-ups, and other important student interactions. Maintaining accurate and secure log entries helps ensure proper documentation, accountability, and continuity of support across school staff.

Important Note

By default, PowerSchool allows authorized users to create and manage log entries based on their assigned security permissions. Teachers typically have access to create log entries for their students; however, editing permissions are more restricted to preserve data integrity and maintain a reliable audit trail within the system.

In most standard PowerSchool configurations:

  • Teachers can create log entries
  • Teachers may view selected log entries depending on district security settings
  • Administrative users with elevated permissions can edit existing log entries
  • Teachers generally cannot edit or delete submitted log entries once saved

Currently, PowerSchool does not provide a native security setting that allows teachers to edit only the log entries they personally created while restricting access to entries created by other users. Allowing this type of ownership-based editing would typically require custom development, plugins, or advanced security customizations.

Because student log entries may contain sensitive behavioral, disciplinary, or compliance-related information, many districts intentionally limit editing access to administrative staff in order to:

  • Preserve documentation accuracy
  • Maintain historical records
  • Support compliance and auditing requirements
  • Prevent accidental modification of official student records

As a best practice, many schools allow teachers to add follow-up or correction entries rather than modifying previously submitted log entries directly.
